Staff Changes at Brisbane Turf Club
After five years as General Manager of Marketing at Brisbane Turf Club (BTC), Jillian Peacock will be making a city change with a move to Sydney.  After an overseas trip over the Xmas period, she will be moving to Sydney’s northern beaches with her family.  Jillian finishes at BTC on Friday 21st December and has been with the Club for a total of eight years.  I’m sure she will be greatly missed!

Following the resignation of BTC CEO Sean Kelk, Racecourse Manager Warren Williams currently presides as the acting CEO.  Warren has worked as Racecourse Manager at Doomben for over 13 years.  He started his career as the Grounds Manager of the Moonee Valley Race Club in 1985.

Renowned racing personality, Ken Callander, has been in the media spotlight for over forty years.  He commenced his career as copy boy for The Daily Mirror in 1962 and has been the voice of racing to loyal punters ever since.

He has appeared on television, radio and in the newspapers and has now turned his journalistic hand to book writing recently releasing one of the best reads on the sports scene, ‘Good Luck and Good Punting’.

Click here to read about the blood, sweat and tears that went in to compiling the book and Ken’s views on EI.

Sydney Race Fans Flock Back to Rosehill Gardens

More than 10,000 racegoers braved the threat of bad weather on Saturday, 8 December to attend Sydney Turf Club’s first race meeting since the EI crisis brought NSW thoroughbred racing to a four-month standstill.

Rosehill Gardens came to life with racegoers, punters, trainers, jockeys and owners all eager to return to the track.

A cheer went up from the crowd as the gates flew back to launch the opening race, which provided Rosehill trainer Greg McFarlane with his first metropolitan winner, Baadi Blasted.

The race meet was held a week after the passing of Jim Fleming AO. Jim, a former Chairman of Sydney Turf Club, renowned retailer who established the Flemings and Jewel grocery chains in Australia and noted breeder was honoured with a tribute before the fifth race, the Vale Jim Fleming AO Handicap.  Fittingly, this race was taken out by local horse, Ready to Lift, trained by Rosehill’s Gerald Ryan.

In another milestone, South African rider Jeff Lloyd scored his first victory on Sydney soil when he steered Vecchia Roma home in the last.

Brisbane Turf Club's Post EI Celebrations

City Pacific Doomben’s return to racing Saturday 1st December was a highly anticipated event that did not disappoint.  Above average crowds attended the day with course dress codes relaxed to celebrate both the first day of racing and the first day of summer.  Many punters happily dressed in beachwear to join in the fun of the day and to win spot prizes of mystery bets and movie tickets.  Ladies were rewarded for dressing up with a $1,000 major prize voucher from The Mask with Fashions on the Field while the boys were rewarded for dressing down in Best Boardies on the Field with a Mini Mal Surf Board from Primitive Surf up for grabs.

Day two of pre-Christmas racing Saturday 8th December included a large number of Christmas functions and marquees.  True to form Queensland in December turned on the heat with temperatures soaring above thirty degrees but nothing could deter the party goers from enjoying the atmosphere of the day.  On the St Leger Lawn alone over 1,500 attended various marquee functions, dined on over 140 kilos of prawns, 180 dozen oysters and over 360 bottles of bubbly.

City Pacific Doomben will race again Saturday 29 December 2007 with live entertainment (Band - Bigger Than Texas), great racing with full tote and bookmakers facilities and free buses back to the Valley.

Eagle Farm Also Back on TrackQTC-Racing-Image2-small.jpg

It’s been a long and painful wait, but Eagle Farm has been finally gearing up for the much anticipated return of horse racing.

After almost three months, thoroughbreds thundered down the straight once again at Eagle Farm last Saturday 15th December for the Seppelt Wines Christmas Party Raceday with over 4,000 racegoers at the track.

With the return of racing and fast-approaching Christmas both cause for celebration, Queensland Turf Club definitely threw quite a party.

Live music and entertainment, children’s activities and a special visit from Santa all featured on the day making it a great day for the whole family.  The exciting eight race program featured the $100,000 Quality Handicap.

Music legend Daryl Braithwaite paid special tribute to the return of horse racing, performing hit songs such as “One Summer”, and of course, “The Horses” live.

The horses didn’t miss out either, as the newly extended and reshaped mounting yard and eliminated 600m crossing on the course proper had them galloping to a different beat.

Victoria's Spring Carnival in Review

The 2007 Spring Racing Carnival again proved a major success despite the ever present threat of Equine Influenza.

The second highest aggregate attendance figures on record flocked to the 50 days of the Spring Racing Carnival, highlighted by more than 48,000 people on BMW Caulfield Cup Day, 42,000 on Tattersall’s Cox Plate Day and almost 400,000 for the four days of the VRC’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.  For further details of the carnival, click here.
